Disability Thinking Weekday: 4/26/24
Friday Video Share: "Accessible Elections - Information for Election Officials: Interacting With People With Disabilities”
Here’s one more bit of election-related content to think about, for Friday, April 26, 2024 …
This seems like it would work pretty well as a very basic guide to dealing with disabled people at voting sites — or in any customer service situation. I would only rase two issues. They are I think additions rather than than criticisms:
As noted in the video, “emotional support animals” aren’t covered by the ADA and don’t have the same “public access rights” other service animals have. But if an emotional support animal is well-behaved and not disruptive at the polling place, wouldn’t it be a good idea to just let it slide anyway, without making an issue of it in a way that hinders a person’s right to vote?
The notes here about not making assumptions about what disabled people need are important, and not just in specific situations. It can also help underscore a general principle that should be a relief to non-disabled people who are anxious about interacting with disabled people. In general, you’re not responsible for anticipating our needs, but rather responding as positively as possible when we ask for help or accommodation.
What are your thoughts on this video and what it has to say?
Have a terrific weekend everyone!
