Moving to Ghost on January 1!
Disability Thinking Weekday will move out of Substack, to the Ghost platform on January 1, 2025. There are several reasons for this, including:
I have concerns about Substack’s policies and practices on offensive content. This bothered me from the start, and I have become more concerned about it over time.
Readership and membership from people I want to reach in the disability community has I think been limited by Substack’s reputation about this.
I have grown a bit dissatisfied with the Substack platform overall, especially the limited and tricky options for customization.
Ghost seems to offer a simpler platform, with more options to make the site look good, and better analytics to tell me how the newsletter is doing.
Results from my November 15 poll suggest that enough readers would follow Disability Thinking Weekday to a new platform to make the move feasible.
To help facilitate the move, I will set annual paid memberships at $40 in December and January. The move to Ghost, including possible paid technical assistance and a sufficient annual fee to accommodate my whole readership, will cost me about $400. I hope a discount on annual memberships will encourage readers to help me out with some one-time donations.
There will be plenty of notice before the final move to Ghost. So everyone who wants to will have the chance to sign up for the new subscriptions as soon as possible, without interruption. Annual paid subscriptions in January will continue at the $40 discount, then go back to $50 in February. $5 monthly paid memberships will continue as usual. Anyone who has questions about transferring or renewing their existing paid memberships can email me directly.
As always, I am thankful for your help and engagement, in whichever forms you choose!
You did a good job figuring out this move and what is best for your readers. I will definitely follow you.
